Thinking of a Career in Engineering?

How to find out more

Young people and businesses looking for more information on a career in engineering will benefit from reading through our quick guide below and following the links for more in-depth information.

SEMTA - Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance is the Sector Skills Council for the engineering sector. This organisation can provide you with a wealth of information on the various levels and types of apprenticeships available. www.semta.org.uk

National Occupational Standards
SEMTA is also responsible for developing the National Occupational Standards for the engineering sector. These are the standards which define occupational competence and which are used to create National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). SEMTA works with the Occupational Standards Council for Engineering (OSCEng) to ensure that a single and coherent set of standards is produced across the whole engineering sector.

SEMTA develops the occupational map for the sector, which describes the key occupations. From this a qualification map is produced which shows which qualifications are required, and at which levels. It then develops the NVQ structure and its associated assessment strategy. Once the qualification and its assessment strategy have been approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), awarding bodies can then apply to award qualifications within the map.
