External Affairs committee meeting

Published : July 24, 2009

Late last month the MTA held its first meeting of the new External Affairs Committee. The new group has been set up to help direct the Association's political and promotional activity.

External Affairs committee meeting During the meeting Paul O'Donnell, MTA Head of External Affairs,  reported on recent parliamentary contacts. He had focussed on two particular policy areas; the introduction of financial support for  Short Time Working and the availability of finance to companies. Paul has also been providing input to members of the Business and Enterprise Select Committee.

Graham Dewhurst gave feedback on the most recent CECIMO meeting, during which a key presentation indicated that machine tool order recovery may not reach much above 60% of 2007 levels before 2012.

In addition the committee decided to create sub-committees to consider specific issues falling under their remit and to formulate appropriate policies for the MTA.

In closing the meeting it was agreed that the Association needs to project a strong message about the importance of manufacturing; with more reference to Engineering Based Manufacturing, the balance of trade and helping the country to flourish.
