BGA EVENT 2010 - Understanding Engineering Steels seminar

Start date : 22nd September 2010 10.00am - 4.00pm (with refreshment breaks)

Venue : Bretby Conference Centre, Burton on Trent, DE15 0YZ

There are literally thousands of engineering steel specifications, most of which are either unavailable in small quantities or obsolete. However, there are actually less than ten different classes of application ranging from ultra high-tensile grades, carbon steels, nitriding steels to surface hardening grades.

Event type : Seminar

When selecting material for a particular applicationit is important to be able to understand how and why core strength varies from grade to grade.

Problems encountered en route in producing the final component (e.g. distortion) may well be avoided by planning and simple understanding of material behaviour.

The seminar will cover:

  • Introduction to steel production
  • General Classification of steel grades
  • The roles played by individual alloying elements
  • Understanding direct hardening, casehardening and surface hardening
  • Problems to be avoided (with examples of process failures in a variety of components)
  • Common engineering steels

Tutor: Mr Graham Haywood, C En, FIMMM. Bergsman UK.

Registration: Forms should be returned to BGA by 8 September 2010

Event co-sponsored by the Tribology and the Aerospace Industries Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Manufacturing Technologies Association.
