Newsletter Listing intro for week 32

Welcome to the Friday Brief for week-ending 9 August.
The economic statistics this week point to broadly encouraging trends for the sectors of interest to MTA members. Demand in the aerospace and automotive manufacturing industries continues to grow and the context for UK manufacturing overall remains positive.
Against this background we have news of a meet the funder event being organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT). This is the second event co-ordinated by the SMMT to bring leading financial institutions and other professionals together with businesses in the automotive sector.
News has just reached us of funding available through a design challenge. This scheme will be relevant to many members and of particular interest to those who are also members of the Institute of Metal Finishing. The deadline for entries is early September so check out the entry in this week’s Friday Brief.
We can confirm that the MTA’s annual general meeting will be on 4 December. Save this date in your diaries. The AGM will be held at the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire and more details will follow shortly.
Don’t forget the MTA’s Annual Golf Day will be held on 26 September. Teams of four can enter so start planning your selection and register for what has always been a very enjoyable occasion and useful networking opportunity.
A final reminder to submit Business Survey entries for July. Geoff Noon is holding out for final responses for a few more days, but will have to proceed to analyse the submitted data shortly.
As many members will be enjoying their annual leave there will not be a Friday Brief on 16th August.
Have a good weekend.

This week’s report from RationalFX notes that last week saw all three central banks come into focus with the US Federal Reserve Bank outlining monetary policy, the Bank of England deciding on the key interest rate and quantitative easing plan and the European Central Bank outlining monetary policy as well.

Meet the funder event

Meet the funder event

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) will bring together some of the UK's largest financial lenders and automotive supply chain companies at a specialist automotive networking event on 24 October 2013 at Cranmore Park, Solihull.

Designed to enhance dialogue, strengthen relationships and ramp-up lending in the auto industry, this event will provide opportunities to meet with all of the leading banks along with other financial, regional support and advice organisations.

The expected organisations include:

Materials Research Funding

Materials Research Funding

The Technology Strategy Board has just announced a call, which closes on September  11th 2013, for funding of up to 75% of eligible costs towards research for projects associated with strategic resource efficiency, refurbishment, remanufacturing and materials substitution.

Economic news

Economic news

UK Industrial Output, June 2013:  The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the data for June which completes the 2nd quarter of the year. In this report, we will focus on the quarterly data trends, but it is worth noting that for many parts of the manufacturing sector, June appears to have been a very strong month in contrast to May that was generally weak.  This may be related to the seasonal adjustment of the data and the changes to the public holidays in 2012 which moved them from May to June.

The MTA’s Annual General Meeting will be held on 4 December 2013 at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire. Save the date in your diary now for what promises to be an interesting venue for the AGM. Full details will be released as soon as they are available.
