Newsletter Listing intro for week 47

Welcome to the Friday Brief for week-ending 22 November.

Members and non-members are reminded that the entry deadline for the MTA’s 2014 Manufacturing Industry Awards is Friday 29 November. Entering the Awards represents an outstanding opportunity to showcase your company’s achievements and/or the potential of one of your young engineers. Adjudication will be by an expert panel convened by the MTA and the Awards will be presented during the MTA’s Annual Dinner at the ICC Birmingham. Demand for places at the dinner is very strong so shortlisted entrants will be assured valuable publicity in front of a large audience drawn from across UK manufacturing.

Entry to the Manufacturing Industry Awards is not limited to MTA members. A link to the entry details is included in this week’s Friday Brief story. Categories include: Best Supplier Partnership, Best Training Scheme and Young Engineer of the Year. Applications for the AMTRI scholarship are also welcomed.

The themes of Skills and Eco-Design were centre stage at the Autumn General Assembly of CECIMO, the European Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers. The Assembly held in Vienna earlier this month was very well attended and we have a full report with links to documents considered at the Assembly in this week’s Friday Brief.
Another Friday Brief story highlights the announcement of an opportunity for members to attend briefings and one-to-one sessions with leading representatives of the Russian aerospace industry. The inward mission to the UK will be between 2 and 4 December but registration must be made by 25 November. See this week’s Friday Brief story for registration contact details.
A note for your diaries: the 4th of December will see the MTA’s AGM held at Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre. We’re delighted that this year we will be joined by Professor Sir Mike Gregory, Director of the Institute for Manufacturing at Cambridge University and one of our sector’s most interesting thinkers, who will share his thoughts on the challenges manufacturing faces in the 21st Century. See this week’s story for registration details.

Have a good weekend.

Annual Business Survey, Provisional Results for 2012:  The Annual Business Survey (ABS) from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is focused on top level structural information, but is published by industry. It includes series such as total turnover and capital expenditure and, usefully for us, the metal products and machinery industries are broken down, so it provides an opportunity to look at the relative sizes of these industries and the sub-sectors.

Local government and manufacturing

Local government and manufacturing

Thursday saw the MTA attending a seminar at the House of Commons organised by the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group on the topic of Local Government and Manufacturing. Led by John Stevenson MP for Carlisle a number of Local Government experts gave their views on how manufacturing could be helped by town halls up and down the land.

The Autumn General Assembly of CECIMO, the European Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers was held in Vienna on 8-9 November 2013. The event recorded the highest attendance ever, and covered two key areas affecting our industry now and in the future: the skills shortage, and the European implementation measures on Energy Efficiency (Eco-Design) legislation.
