Friday Brief 27/08/2021

Good afternoon and welcome to this week’s Friday Brief. It’s coming to the end of another month and with many going back to school and holiday’s ending, we’ve seen an increase in activity.

We would like to begin the Friday Brief this week with a note to asking all members to be aware of scam and fraud emails. A couple of our members have been receiving scam emails and phone calls. The scam email going around has the subject line “Important Notice: Members Update”. This is not an email from the MTA, this is a fraud email.

Below we have a story regarding cyber-crime and fraud phone calls. One of our members experienced a phone call that was made from an alleged “High Court Enforcement Officer”. Find out more about what happened and how to report fraud below.

Moving on to the topic of webinars. Specifically for manufacturing businesses, MTA members are invited to a free webinar on 1 September, from 3:45 to 5:00 PM, covering important Health & Safety considerations surrounding manual handling. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recently confirmed they will be prioritising the inspection of manual handling management and ergonomics when visiting businesses. Check out more information and how to register in the story.

Join a webinar by NMIS to meet the all new NMIS SME Engagement Team and learn about how our advisors can provide you with transparent, unbiased advice and support to help navigate your innovation journey. During the session the NMIS SME Engagement Lead will explain what types of support are available, how to engage with the team and the many benefits that this can bring. Please find the link to register in the story.

The government has confirmed that firms will be able to use the CE mark until 1st January 2023 in most sectors. BEIS said, in a note to trade associations, that the pandemic has made adapting to the new regime more challenging, hence the one-year extension. You can find comments and the link to the full announcement below in the story. You can also find a link to the UKCA guide on our website.

This week we have 3 BSI Standards for you. The first is regarding 4D Printing, the second specifies the safety requirements for service robots used in personal and professional/commercial applications and the third specifies the general requirements for digital twin supported NC system of machine tools. Find all three is one story below with all the details.

The three elements of our economic news article this week all tie up with each other.  The results of the latest CBI survey which shows manufacturing activity remains strong despite an easing in output growth as a result of the problems in the automotive industry is picked up in the flash PMI data for manufacturing and the latest figures on car and engine output from SMMT.  Take a look at the article below for more information on these related topics.

That is all we have for this end of the month Friday Brief. Thank you for reading, enjoy the bank holiday weekend and we’ll ‘see’ you again next week!

ECONOMIC NEWS

CBI Industrial Trends Survey, August 2021:  The latest results from the CBI Industrial Trends Survey (ITS) show that while activity remains strong in August the pace of growth in output in the 3 months to August eased from its record high level in July.  There was an increase in output in 13 of the 17 categories in the ITS with the food & drink industry the strongest (this probably reflects the re-opening of the hospitality sector).

BSI Standards Committees

BSI Standards Committees

Standards play an important role in the economy by promoting best practice, facilitating business interaction and providing individuals and organisations with a basis for mutual understanding that facilitates communication, manufacturing and commerce.

Please be advised that a New Work Item Proposal has been loaded to the BSI Standards Development Portal for comment. We hope this will assist in increasing awareness of the Standards Development Portfolio.
