Friday Brief Intro 15/10/2021

Good afternoon and welcome to this week’s Friday Brief. We hope that you find something of interest among the news items this week.

MTA Associate Member, 4CM, is running a half-day workshop to help manufacturers improve the results from their marketing and sales activities. Check out the story to find the registration link and view some points of what’s included.

The MTA is looking to host a UK pavilion at Metalloobrabotka 2022 in Moscow, Russia, 23-27th May. The pavilion, which will be one of the main halls at the show, will host MTA/EIA members as well as an association stand, with events planned for during the week. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, please see the story below.

The MTA, as part of SHEP, would like to invite you to the next SHEP webinar. With more and more people back in the office and winter approaching, this webinar is designed to provide information on how using ventilation can help to prevent the spread of COVID 19 in the workplace. Find out more below.

Yesterday saw the MTA Golf Day take place at the Leicestershire Golf Club. Check out the story below to view the who won which prizes.

Dell UK is proud to partner with The Manufacturing Technologies Association to provide a range of discounts on selected IT and other benefits to Members. See some points on how else they can help in their story.

Firms will have noticed surging wholesale energy prices, which will be causing alarm.  In addition, there is an undercurrent of concern about UK energy supply. Find some notes and comments in the story below.

Following the speech given by Lord Frost earlier this week, Jack Semple, Secretary of EAMA (of which MTA is a member) has prepared an opinion piece on the contents of the speech. The EU is about to publish its response to the UK’s position calling for a renegotiation of the Protocol. More information and comments can be found in the story.

Promoted by CECIMO, the European Association of Machine Tool Industries, and organised by the operational structures of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, the Italian machine tools, robots and automation systems Manufacturers' Association, EMO MILANO 2021 registered more than 60,000 visitors coming from 91 countries. View the full press release below.

This is the final call for the MTA Forecast Seminar (because this time next week it will have happened!).  We already have a good audience but with a large room to facilitate social distancing, there is space for more.  You can get the details of the speakers and the form for booking your place at https://www.mta.org.uk/event/forecast-seminar-2021 - we hope to see you there at what is always an informative event that will be invaluable in your business planning for 2022.  Remember, this is an exclusive service available only for MTA members.

We have split the economic news across two articles this week because we wanted to highlight the various pieces of data on the output of UK manufacturing and its components parts and having just one article risked swamping this important information as it has been a busy week for data.

The item on UK Manufacturing Output covers the data released by the ONS (in which we also take a quick look at the impact of the recent re-basing and sometimes spectacular revisions to this data), the figures published by SMMT on the numbers of cars and engines produced in the UK and a new source that we have been made aware of via EIA which looks at activity levels for contract manufacturing.  In the separate Economic News article we look at the monthly GDP data for the UK, the European industrial production figures and the latest data on the US market for manufacturing technology equipment.

Finally a reminder that the MTA Business Survey for September is still open for your input at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-sep21.

Thank you for keeping up to date with us this week. The MTA team wishes you a restful weekend and we’ll ‘see’ you again next Friday!

Notes on energy price surge

Notes on energy price surge

Firms will have noticed surging wholesale energy prices, which will be causing alarm.  In addition, there is an undercurrent of concern about UK energy supply.  The issues are most acute for intensive energy users, only a small proportion of which are eligible for energy cost support from government – but affect all energy users.

MTA Golf Day 2021

MTA Golf Day 2021

Yesterday (Thursday 14th October) saw the MTA Golf Day take place at the Leicestershire Golf Club. Congratulations goes to reigning champions Group Rhodes who got first place in this year’s competition and to Star Micronics who came 2nd.

UK MANUFACTURING OUTPUT

UK MANUFACTURING OUTPUT

UK Manufacturing Output, August 2021:  The new data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has, like the GDP and investment figures we discussed a couple of weeks ago, been re-based to 2019 prices and, perhaps more importantly, revised - significantly so in the case of some historical time series.

ECONOMIC NEWS

ECONOMIC NEWS

UK GDP, August 2021:  After a small fall in the economy in July (the figure of -0.1% has been revised down from +0.1%), UK GDP increased by 0.4% month-on-month in August, but the economy is still -0.8% smaller than in Feb
