Friday Brief Intro 11/11/2022

Good afternoon and welcome to this week’s Friday Brief! What a lovely sunny Memorial Day to honour armed forces members who died in the line of duty back in WW1.

First up this week we would like to remind you that the MTA’s AGM is just a month away! We have two great speakers lined up talking about practical advice for reducing energy consumption as well as how the MoD have tackled the issue of climate change and the route to net zero. Take a look at the story below for more details.

We are delighted to announce our first two Regional Members Meeting events will be taking place in January at the Advanced Propulsion Centre (Warwick) on Tuesday 17th and at Factory 2050 (Sheffield) on Wednesday 18th January. The aim of these events is to allow members to discover and/or be reminded about MTA services, help you create a network of local contacts and links to OEMs in addition to being informed on a current topic. Check out the details below and sign up today.

New education secretary Gillian Keegan has spoken of her aims in the role.  Reform of technical education and making sure everyone has access to high quality apprenticeships are what she would most want to look back on as a success, after her time at the department. In the story you can find more information about Gillian and take a look at a BBC 4 interview with her.

The International Trade Committee has called for members of the public/businesses to submit their questions to the Secretary of State for International Trade about the work of the Department for International Trade. The MPs will draw on submissions to inform some of their questioning in the session. Find out more about the topics that are included in the story below.

The MTA has a free training opportunity on GDPR. Everything on GDPR compliance will be explained in a webinar taking place on the 7th December. Go to the story to find more details and a link to sign up.

It has been a busy morning with the publication of the data on GDP, manufacturing output, investment and trade for the 3rd quarter of the year.  Our economic news article this week concentrates on the first two of these and we will round up the other data next week.  The headlines are fairly gloomy with the UK economy contracting in Q3 entirely because of a fall in manufacturing output, with the service sector flat and construction growing.  However, the picture is a little more complicated than the headline suggests and we explore that in our two-part article this week.

Finally, the October edition of the MTA Business Survey is still open for your input – you can do this via the online form at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-oct22.  We are hoping to get this closed off next week so, with thanks to those who have already replied, we hope that you can all spare a couple of minutes to let us have your input.

That concludes our Newsletter for this week! We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to ‘seeing’ you again next week for more great stories!
