Some businesses have reported receiving an official looking letter from a German company asking for a form to be completed to include their VAT registration number.
The pretext of the request suggests that this is due to new EU legislation, but in reality this is a scam. If business owners complete the form, they will be liable for £797 per year for a minimum of three years.
The scam has been brought to the attention of West Midlands MEP Malcolm Harbour who has a reputation for standing up for business and investigating unscrupulous trading practices.
Malcolm Harbour said: “Should any business have received one of the letters from the German company, I’d be happy to hear from them as it will help me collate the extent of this scam.”
Malcolm can be contacted by email on firstname.lastname@example.org
You may also wish to report the receipt of any such letter to your local Trading Standards office.
