Members are alerted to the risk of a potentially catastrophic virus scam that is linked, fraudulently, to the Health and Safety Executive. The virus is in an email purporting to be from the HSE to arrange an appointment for an inspector to make a site visit. It provides a date and time and has a form to completed in an attachment. When the attachment is opened, it can bring down the company’s IT system, including its manufacturing machines, and the system has had to be rebuilt. The scam has been reported it to the police.
Similar scams are reported, ostensibly from well-known corporates, with increasingly convincing letterheads and including names of people within the company.
