Please be advised that a New Work Item Proposal has been loaded to the BSI Standards Development Portal for comment.

Any comments received will be submitted to the national committee AMT/8  “Additive Manufacturing” for consideration when deciding the UK response to the associated Standards Development Organisation.

Proposal: ISO/ASTM PWI 52957 Additive Manufacturing — Design — Parts using ceramic materials

Comment period end date: 29/12/2023

Scope

This standard is aimed at product planners and designers who want to use parts made of ceramic materials. It provides the necessary basic knowledge about ceramic parts and the special possibilities of additive manufacturing of ceramics. Therefore, more in-depth previous knowledge in these areas is not assumed.

Purpose

The purpose of the NP is to establish rules for the design of ceramics parts made with AM. The market of AM of ceramics has been growing at a fast rate since 2010 and is now reaching the general market. As designing ceramics is very different from other materials, special rules have been established, but these do not comprehend the aspects of AM. This NP will simplify designing and using of ceramic parts made with AM. Other than standard production methods, AM offers the possibility of integrating many functions into one part. This makes parts form AM lighter, less material intensive and more durable than traditional parts, but only if the characteristics of the individual AM processes are taken into account. This NP will give a simple and comprehensive set of rules to make this possible. It is aimed at designers and developers in industry and research.
