MTA Support STEM day to encourage next generation of engineers in Manchester

This week saw the Manufacturing Technologies Association support the PPMA BEST (Business Education, Skills and Training) STEM day to encourage next generation of engineers.

PPMA BEST is an independent charitable trust set up to encourage young people to discover the opportunities for a career in the engineering industries, partnered with the Museum of Science and Industry, in Manchester, to host an interactive STEM day on Monday 13th November.

The event saw over 100 year 10 students from schools across the Greater Manchester Region engage in an exciting computing, technology, engineering and maths challenge. It encouraged them to build, program and test their solutions based on LEGO® building elements combined with real-world robotics technology.

Following the workshop, students were invited to explore the museum’s Robots exhibition and discover recent developments in robotic research. The exhibition includes a unique collection of over 100 robots, from a 17th century dancing wine goblet and animatronic baby to Maria from the 1927 film classic Metropolis and a news-reading android from Japan.

MTA members Renishaw also supported the event by providing STEM ambassadors to help the school children navigate the testing robotics challenge at the event.

Laura Pickering, the MTA’s Education and Development co-ordinator, said “It was a fantastic event and great to collaborate with PPMA BEST, The Smallpeice Trust and British Automation and Robotics Association (BARA). Industry collaboration like this is vital to encouraging the next generation of engineers into the industry.”

She continued “to see so many teenagers engage with the robotics challenge and be genuinely enthused by the day was very rewarding, I think we have helped to change the perception of the students and teachers in attendance of what modern day engineering entails.”

STEM days are a widely acknowledged way to support schools by linking the curriculum to the wider world and demonstrating the direct relevance of subjects taught in school with the world of work.
