NPL MMN Event - Launch Into Space and Nuclear

We're pleased to announce that the July MMN event will be held in corporation with the EEF-NDI

The UK space industry is a success story for manufacturing and an area for potential growth within the UK.

The UK is getting the go-ahead to start building its own space launch sites, so it can launch rockets and satellites from a UK-based “Spaceport”.

Space is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK: in 2014/15 it is worth more almost £14 billion (6.5% of the global space economy) and gives jobs to around 38,500 people and the laws to get the engines fired-up on a spaceport are due to be passed during March.

Of this enormous sum, 8% was directly attributed to manufacturing and this is growing. The UK government has set a target for the space industry to grow to 10% of the world market by 2030 and is supporting this through the UK Space Agency by providing €200,000 grants for technology developments.

Hear from Huddersfield-based SME ‘Reliance Precision’ about their work in this sector and learn more about how you can become involved.

The UK has an ambitious plan to develop the latest generation of nuclear power stations to fill the gap left by decommissioned stations and the move away from carbon burning technologies. To meet it’s objectives, there will be a need to manufacture components and assemblies in the UK from both current manufacturers of these parts and from new suppliers. The government with Innovate UK, Research Councils and BEIS expect to invest around £460m in nuclear research and innovation between 2016 and 2021. Find out more about opportunities such as the “Small Modular Reactor”, potential sources of funding, how to access this market and about the support provided by organisations such as the Nuclear AMRC in Sheffield.

The event is completely FREE to attend and will begin at 5:30pm with optional lab tours of the NPL facility from 4:30pm

Food and drink will be provided and free car parking on site is available on a first come first serve basis
