This week saw the publication of Evidence submitted to the International Trade Select Committee inquiry into export support. Among the organisations that submitted memoranda were EAMA, the mechanical engineering umbrella group of which MTA is a member. MTA contributed to the process of putting it together an it chimed with some of our themes; notably the need to boost the visibility of UK Export Finance, giving qualified support to last year’s Export Strategy and – most importantly – raising the dire predicament of the Trade Show Access Programme, which is to restrictive and badly underfunded in comparison to competitor nations. You can read the evidence here.
Unfortunately, this week also saw the resignation as Trade Minister of Baroness Fairhead. Some members will have met the Baroness on her visit to MACH 2018 where she impressed with her understanding of the issues businesses faced and her energy. In subsequent meetings we felt that she was supportive of the arguments that we were making and we regret her leaving of the Government to return to the private sector. As yet, no replacement has been announced.
