Technology, Design and Innovation (TDI) Challenge

The MTA’s TDI Challenge exists to help teachers and lecturers promote the great work of their D&T and Engineering students and to celebrate the creativity and innovation taking place inside the curriculum. In turn, the competition helps our industry to better understand the challenges that education is facing and how we might be able to assist through collaboration.

The 2024 TDI Challenge

The 2024 TDI Challenge is open to all young people aged 14-19. It is an opportunity to showcase your creative talent to an industry that relies upon vision and innovation.

We need you to come up with your own design for a new product or concept, explain its application and produce a video, no longer than two minutes, to demonstrate how and why your invention will benefit users.

You can use your Design and Technology coursework from school/college for your entry or if you prefer, you can enter a completely different idea. Cardboard mock-ups and CAD models are all accepted.

The competition is free to enter, and students have chances to win prizes for themselves (including a day out to a F3 race day for the top 3 entries – COVID dependent) and schools have the chance to win prizes to help support the delivery of Design and Technology teaching in their classroom.

How to Enter

Visit our dedicated website – – for the full competition details and complete the online entry form.

Innovation is helping to shape our world like never before, therefore we want young people to be as bold and original as possible.  In doing so, they will be showcasing their own talents and helping to promote some of the great work taking place in our schools and colleges. They’ll also be helping the manufacturing technologies industry better understand the challenges that education faces and how it might provide assistance.

Event Timeline

The final will be held on the 10th July 2024 at the Yamazaki Mazak facility in Worcester. Judges will pick several finalists from the entries by the end of May 2024. These finalists will then be invited to come and present their idea/concept in more detail at an event with a winner being chosen on the day.
