The ONS reported that UK real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have grown by +0.1% in the third quarter of 2025 (July to Sept), following growth of +0.3% in the second quarter (Apr to June).

GDP is estimated to have risen by +1.3% in Q3 2025 compared with the same quarter a year earlier.

In Q3 2025, two of the three main sectors expanded. Services grew by +0.2%, and construction increased by +0.1%, while production output declined by -0.5%. Notably, production fell by -2.0% in September 2025, mainly due to a cyber-attack that halted operations at Jaguar Land Rover.

The decline in production during Q3 2025 was mainly driven by falls of -0.8% in manufacturing and -1.5% in “mining & quarrying”. Further detail on manufacturing is provided in the “UK Manufacturing Output” article in this edition of Economic News. Offsetting this, there were increases of +0.7% in “electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply” and +0.6% in “water supply; sewerage, waste management & remediation activities”.

Services output rose by +0.2% in Q3, following growth of +0.4% in Q2. Nine of the fourteen services subsectors contributed positively. The largest positive contribution came from “arts, entertainment & recreation”, which grew by +3.5%, led by “creative arts & entertainment activities” (+12.5%). Other key contributors were “real estate activities” (+0.3%) and “public administration & defence; compulsory social security” (+0.8%). The largest negative contributor was “professional, scientific & technical activities”, which declined by -0.6%, with five of its eight industries contracting.

Construction output is estimated to have increased by +0.1% in Q3 2025, following growth of +1.0% in the previous quarter. “Repair & maintenance” rose by +0.6%, while “new work” fell by -0.2%. Within “repair & maintenance” (R&M), the strongest growth came from “private housing R&M” (+2.9%). In “new work” (NW), the largest negative contribution came from “private housing NW”, which declined by -1.9%.
