The following are outside the scope of this document:

— the methods used for the resolution of authoritative legal entity identifiers by the registrar that issued the ALEI

Purpose

At each step of planning, sourcing, making, delivering, and returning, buyers and suppliers need a standard way to unambiguously identify all parties to limit corporate identity theft and resultant fraudulent transactions, make visible when what appear to be multiple suppliers offering the same items at different prices is actually one supplier operating under multiple trade names, know positively who is legally accountable in a contract, verify a business’s legal status, and research the economic and corporate social responsibility of each potential trading partner. This can be achieved through using and verifying the Authoritative Legal Entity Identifier (ALEI), formatted in accordance with ISO 8000-116, legal name, and date of origin of a legal entity with the governing body that granted it legal existence; identifiers issued by the governing body of a nation, state, or community that granted legal status are ALEIs. ISO 8000-116 defines the international format for an ALEI that combines an issuing party prefix with the locally issued legal entity identifier to create a globally unique identifier. The ability to verify the validity of an identifier to support business processes in a timely and costeffective manner is dependent on the ability of the identifier issuing party to reply to a request for identifier verification by providing sufficient data to perform validation. ISO 8000-116 does not describe the format to request verification of and reply to the request for verification of the authoritative legal entity identifier with the authoritative source; only how to format the identifier itself. There are obstacles in the current primarily manual verification process.

This document provides the format of a request for the verification of an ALEI formatted in accordance with ISO 8000-116 and the standard reply to such a request as well as the format of a request for data of an ALEI formatted in accordance with ISO 8000-116 and the standard reply to such a request.
