Call for Input: ISO 16156 – Machine Tool Safety (Work Holding Chucks)

A new proposal is out for ballot to revise BS ISO 16156:2004 – Machine-tools safety: Safety requirements for the design and construction of work holding chucks. This standard, though short in length, is relied upon by many in the sector, and the revision could impact a broad range of users.

MTA invites members to review the proposed changes and share their views. Members can also express whether they would like the UK to cast a particular vote on the proposal and if anyone wishes to act as a UK expert to supply comments on behalf of the UK during the revision process.

Proposed new Scope of ISO 16156

This document applies to manually operated and power-operated, rotating and non-rotating clamping devices that generate clamping force by the displacement at least one part/component and are intended for use on cutting machine tools and/or their associated handling devices. This document deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations, and hazardous events that apply to clamping devices when they are used as intended.

It specifies the safety requirements and protective measures to be observed by persons involved in the design, construction, and supply (including assembly and disassembly, with special provisions for transport and maintenance) of clamping devices. This document covers safety requirements for the following clamping devices as defined in ISO 19719:2010 Chapter 1, except for interchangeable devices (see ISO 19719:2010, 1.32). It does not apply to clamping devices for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (according to the ATEX Directive).

Existing Scope of ISO 16156:2004

This International Standard sets out the requirements and/or measures to remove the hazards and limit the risk on work holding chucks which are defined in 3.1. It covers all the hazards relevant to this component, as listed in Clause 4. The requirements concern designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers of work holding chucks. It also includes information which the manufacturer shall provide for the user. It is primarily directed to components which are manufactured after its date of issue.
