Comment period end date:22/06/2025

Scope

This document defines compatibility requirements for end-effectors with power needs up to 200W, focusing on the electrical interface at the robot side, including connectors, characteristics, designations, and safety interfacing. It excludes mechanical interface details (covered by ISO 9409), communication protocols, safety performance, end-effector-side connections, and cybersecurity (see ISO 10218-1/2:2025).

Purpose

While mechanical interfaces for end-effectors are standardized (ISO 9409), electrical interfaces are not—leading to costly, incompatible, or custom solutions. This standard aims to fill that gap, promoting interoperability similar to how USB revolutionized peripheral connections in computing.

Problem Addressed

Lack of standardization in robot-to-end-effector electrical interfaces limits compatibility, increases cost, and hinders innovation.

Benefits

Enables plug-and-play compatibility between robots and tools across brands.

Reduces cabling complexity and cost.

Speeds up system integration and increases product availability.

Supports market growth and innovation by lowering barriers to automation.
