This Type B1 Standard outlines general safety requirements for service and industrial robots that aren’t covered by existing specific (Type-C) safety standards.

  • Industrial robotics are used in restricted-access workplaces.
  • Service robotics can be used by people of any age or ability, in any environment.

Not covered by this standard:

  • Medical robots
  • Robots already covered by ISO 10218 (industrial) and ISO 13482 (service)
  • Military, airborne, underwater, nuclear, climbing, or extreme-condition robots
  • Robots in explosive, corrosive, or hygienically sensitive environments
  • Robots handling dangerous materials or with high acoustic emissions

Why this standard is needed: Current safety standards (ISO 10218 and ISO 13482) leave gaps and overlaps, causing confusion. This Type B1 standard fills those gaps by providing common safety requirements for robotics not addressed by existing standards, ensuring clarity and improving safety across a broader range of robotic applications.
