Friday Brief Intro 28/10/2022

Good afternoon and welcome to this week’s Friday Brief. We have come to the end of October and that means spooky season is upon us! Enjoy the festivities and get ready for a great November!

First up this week we have a story by Jack Semple, Secretary of EAMA who has penned an article for us outlining the events in Westminster in the early part of this week. He takes a look at some of the key Cabinet appointments as they affect manufacturing and goes on to look at some of the challenges facing the government; he also takes a look at some of the likely policy directions of the new Prime Minister based on a speech he gave earlier in the year and also considers the impact of Brexit which is still having an impact on the UK economy.

Jack has also provided an update on the progress of the Retained EU Law Bill that is making its way through parliament this week and, in particular has details of a public consultation being run by The House of Commons Public Bill Committee – this includes a useful explanation of the issues raised by the Bill and how it may work in the context of manufacturing.

MTA, EIA and AM UK members have the opportunity to give their thoughts on the proposed Single Trade Window which is a facility that will allow parties involved in trade and transport to lodge standard information and documents with a single-entry point to fulfil all import, export and transit related regulatory requirements. Find more details in the story below.

The Manufacturing Technologies Association has agreed with HMCA to offer discounted rates for medical plans, dental plan, hospital cash plans, travel plan, income protection and vehicle breakdown products. Take a look at the story below to find out more.

The MTA are a proud partner at this year’s Smart Factory Expo, taking place 16-17th November in Liverpool as part of Digital Manufacturing Week. The industry’s biggest digital manufacturing show brings together all the cutting-edge solutions and technologies enabling the digital manufacturing revolution! Register to visit through the link in the story.

Despite the doors of MACH 2024 not opening for another eighteen months, the exhibition has already received strong support from MTA members with almost two-thirds of the exhibition space now sold. The two ballots staged by the MTA so far have proved extremely positive, with members queuing up to exhibit at the exhibition. Find a comment from James Selka and details on Ballot three in the story below.

Our economic news this week has two pieces on a similar theme sandwiching an overview of the flash PMI data for manufacturing.  The initial PMI readings generally showed a fall compared to the September levels for the UK, Euro-zone and the USA and make rather gloomy reading.

This week also saw the CBI Industrial Trends Survey published; the results broadly match the PMI data with both output and orders falling, although there was a small improvement in employment in our sector.  We also have the latest data from the European Commission Economic Sentiment Indicator which paints a similar picture for industry in Europe with falling confidence driven by weakening order books.  These two surveys both give us new data on capacity utilisation and, again, the trend is generally negative with a couple of exceptions which we highlight in the article this week.

That concludes the last Friday Brief of the month! Have a weekend filled with treats, not tricks and we’ll look forward to ‘seeing’ you in November for our next Friday Brief!
