Friday Brief 01/09/2023 (W35)

Good afternoon and welcome to the first Friday Brief of the month! Can you believe it’s September already? Now that the Summer is almost over, the buzz in the industry is back!

To begin the newsletter this week we would like to introduce you to our newest MTA Associate Member. Moneypenny joined the MTA this week so make sure you go and check out the story below to find out what they do.

The MTA are hosting a webinar with Auditel on the 20th September. Join us to find out the information YOU need to make an informed decision about YOUR Net Zero Journey. Why should your business be considering a carbon programme? Everybody (well, most everybody), wants to do the ‘right thing’ but, particularly in today’s challenging economic conditions, it must make business sense. Auditel look at the most common business drivers in this webinar along with terms of language, reasons why and different options. Go to the story below to find out more and book your space.

The MTA will be exhibiting in Hall 8 stand no 51 at EMO, the world’s leading fair for production technology, which will take place from 18 – 23 September 2023 in Hannover, representing MTA Cluster members (MTA,EIA and AMUK) and the UK contingent at the show. The second is: Information security — Fully homomorphic encryption — Part 4: CGGI variants and the third is: Information security — Fully homomorphic encryption — Part 2: BGV/BFV variants. MTA Associate Member, ForrestBrown have put together a helpful factsheet on the super deduction and what it means to Members. 31st March 2023 saw the end of the much-lauded super deduction – an incentive brought in as an attempt to soften the impact of the rise in Corporation Tax to 25%. With the UK economy presenting challenging conditions for businesses there was much industry pressure for the government to extend the scheme. Find the factsheet in the story.

It has been another relatively quiet week for economic news but we do have the data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for manufacturing out today.  Because of the publishing schedules for the Friday Brief, we don’t have the figures for the Americas or the overall global summary until later today but the general trend was one of small improvements compared to July while remaining firmly in negative territory.  The UK was a notable exception to the trend as our reading fell again and, with the exception of the main Covid months (April/May 2020), is at its lowest since the global financial crisis.  Take a look at this article for more details.

The other economic news this week was the European Commission’s Economic Sentiment Index which also reflected the general weakness in activity, although the measure of industry confidence was broadly unchanged compared to the previous month while the other sectors of the economy registered a decline.

Finally, the September edition of the MTA Business Survey will be launched today – the email is sent to all full MTA members, so please look out for that later.  We hope that you can spare a couple of minutes to participate in this survey which is designed to give a quick overview of the latest situation for the manufacturing technology spectrum in the UK against which you can compare your own situation.

That brings us to the end of this week’s Friday Brief! We hope you enjoy reading the stories and have a great weekend!
