It has been a busy morning for economic news with the release of the monthly GDP and manufacturing output data for January.  In our UK economic news article, we reflect on a mixed picture with the economy recovering some of the ground it lost in December but, thanks to continuing industrial disputes in some sectors, not all of it.  However, manufacturing output fell both in the month-on-month trend and when looking at rolling 3-month periods and we explore the latest data in the article below.

Our other economic news article covers Europe where we examine the revised GDP data from Eurostat which suggests that the EU is right on the cusp of being in recession with the latest estimate suggesting a marginal fall in the 4th quarter of 2022.  The other item in this article is a look at the European Commissions’ Economic Sentiment Indicator; this had been improving around the turn of the year, but the February reading suggests that has paused, in part because of a dip in industry confidence.

Finally, the February edition of the MTA Business Survey is still open for your input and you can find the online form at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-feb23.  We are hoping to get this completed towards the end of next week so, with thanks to those who have already replied, we hope that you can all spare a couple of minutes to let us have your input as we build the picture of activity levels across the manufacturing technology spectrum.

That concludes the Friday Brief for this week. We hope you all have a great weekend!
