EAMA have released a short policy paper on Manufacturing. The paper argues that it is vital to UK prosperity, freedom and sovereignty; its significance is insufficiently recognised within UK government and broader society, resulting in complacency, in sharp contrast to its status in comparable economies and that policy actions are needed, urgently, to strengthen UK manufacturing. The main economic headlines this week come from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for April where there was a mix of trends with the overall global average unchanged from the March reading of 49.6.  There was a little good news in that although output overall fell, there as a small improvement for the investment goods industries.  The UK reading remains in negative territory although, unlike most of the rest of Europe, there was broadly no change compared to March;  in the Americas, the trend was generally higher than in March while there was a mix set of results in Asia.

The only other economic news this week is the first look at GDP data for the 1st quarter of the year in the EU where it looks like a recession may have been avoided, at least for now.  Following a marginally negative result in the final quarter of 2022, the first estimate is that the EU saw growth of +0.3% at the start of this year.

Finally, the April edition of the MTA Business Survey is underway and you can access the questionnaire at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-apr23 – we hope that members can spare a couple of minutes to participate – we would love to hear from you.

That brings us to the end of this week’s Friday Brief! Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend and we’ll ‘see’ you again next week!
