The government has warned of a “major incident” impacting declarations submitted on the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) and the Goods Vehicle Movement System (GVMS), leading to disruption for roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) freight entering Britain. You can review the full article in the story.

The latest data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) generally showed a modest improvement compared to the December reading but despite this, the majority countries/regions that we monitor are still in negative territory.  The UK fitted this model, as did most of Europe, although Asia and the Americas were rather more positive.  Please take a look at the article for more details.

We have split the economic news into separate articles for the UK and Europe.  The UK section is headlined by the MPC announcement to hold the Bank Rate at 5¼% on 6-3 vote – two MPC members voted for an increase while the other dissenting voice was for a reduction.  This article also reports the UK production figures for the automotive industry which reflect an increase during 2023, although the levels for both cars and engines remain below their pre-pandemic peaks

Our European article covers the European Commission’s Economic Sentiment Index and includes the latest capacity utilisation data and we also have the first flash estimate of European GDP for Q4-23 and, of course, the year as a whole.

Finally, the January edition of the MTA Business Survey is underway and you can access the questionnaire at www.mta.org.uk/mta-business-survey-jan24 and we hope that all members can spare a couple of minutes to participate – we would love to hear from you.

That concludes the first Friday Brief of the month! We hope you all have wonderful weekends!
