Friday Brief Intro 12/05/2023

Good afternoon and welcome to this week’s Friday Brief! It’s been a great week with the excitement of the King’s coronation still in the air!

First up this week we would like to announce that the MTA has appointed a new Acting President. With more than 30 years’ experience as Managing Director and Founder of NIKKEN Kosakusho Europe Ltd, Tony Bowkett is responsible for NIKKENs activities across Europe and beyond, which includes multiple subsidiary companies within the NIKKEN Europe Group, together operating in excess of 23 countries. CECIMO have sent out a new Press Release on ‘Positive Economic Picture for European Machine Tool Producers Despite Political and Economic Uncertainties’. Looking back on the previous year, the European MT industry experienced significant recovery despite all the challenges. Strong order momentum was maintained throughout the year, with capacity utilization levels above the 2019 average. According to the latest figures, CECIMO’s MT production reached around €25 billion in 2022, maintaining a share of around 32% of the global MT production. Read the full release below.

This year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise has been officially launched for outstanding achievement by UK businesses in the categories of innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility. Launched to coincide with the coronation, entry to the King’s Awards is a great opportunity for UK businesses to get recognition for their successes in a way that can help them go on to achieve even greater things with winners reporting from benefiting from worldwide recognition, increased commercial value, greater press coverage and a boost to staff morale. HMRC’s Joint Consultative Committee (JCCC), has issued new advice to users of the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) who have moved goods through a non-inventory linked port. It includes guidance on the steps they will need to take to prepare for the CDS migration and when these need to be taken. From May 2023, the government will contact the declarants that have submitted the highest number of export declarations where only GVMS is used, as they are “confident they can start submitting export declarations through CDS.” Check out more below.

The Government says it is amending the REUL Bill to be clear which laws it intends to revoke at the end of this year. This effectively removes the blanket “sunset clause” target of end 2023 for review of all EU retained Law. Alongside this, a paper ‘Smarter Regulation to Grow the Economy’ has been published which sets out a programme of reform to reduce the burden of regulation, to maximise innovation and growth and to support UK businesses and consumers, government says.  Though largely a policy and framework document it includes the intention to reform Working Time regulations. Alongside this, we are publishing a paper ‘Smarter Regulation to Grow the Economy’ which is the first in a series of updates on how we are reforming sectors across the UK economy. It sets out an ambitious programme of reform to reduce our overall regulatory burden, maximise innovation and growth and support UK businesses and consumers.
